Earl and Charlene Sloane started the business in 1951 as a family-owned business. Earl was the first to introduce innovative designs with the use of natural colored stones, topiaries and zen-inspired gardens. His designs were trademarks of creativity that made the company known for creating artistic, non-traditional and practical outdoor living spaces.

Their son, Glen Sloane joined the business at 18 and started managing the business in his late 20's. He then took over the business with the help of his wife Sherie, after Earl's demise in 2004. He continued the Sloanes tradition of quality and innovation by introducing ornamental trees and disease-resistant and maintenance free shrubs. He created eye-catching designs that never go out of season. Water features were also added in their award winning landscapes in Cook County.
