A Closer Look at the Spruce
The spruce is one of the far more useful evergreen in outdoor landscaping. It hold its needles longer, it's branches don't thin out at the bottom and it loves hot, humid weather. It has one of the most delightful appearance in all types of gardens.
When to plant?
Early spring
Where?
Full sun. Slightly acidic soil with some organic matter mixed in. Drainage is essential. Avoid planting spruce trees in small yards or too close to buildings, they will outgrow those sites quickly.
How?
Plant a balled-and-burlapped smaller tree or shrub so that at least 2 inches of the burlap bag is ABOVE the ground. On larger trees, make sure at least 3 to 4 inches is above the ground. Then mound black dirt LEVEL with the burlap bag, NOT on top of the bag. And slope it gently to ground level.
Always use liquid root stimulator when first planting ANY tree or shrub. In addition to this, also use granular evergreen food. NEVER use tree spikes. Fertilize every 4-5 weeks until September 15th.
When watering larger trees or bushes (2" or larger diameter), turn hose on so it shoots out 1-2 inches from the hose. Then lay it at the base of the tree for 10 minutes. Do this 1 TIME per week. Skip a week if we get over 2" of rain.
When fertilizing, water right after that or do before it rains.
