Mid-Spring Garden Care
"Everything has come to life again, Give me the showers That make blooms spring." - Sherie Sloane
Spring has inspired poets and artists alike for centuries to create art and poetry. It's that season where nature lends its hands to gardeners and nurture everything in its land with just the right warmth and showers. All we have to give in return is a little time to care for our garden. There's a bonus - a time for yourself - a time much deserved.
Here's Great Tip No. 1: Deadhead - that is, clip spent blooms off your spring-blooming shrubs (such as lilacs, spirea, rhododendrons, and azaleas). Be careful and thorough; get the back of the plant, and use a ladder or chair to get high flowers. Deadheading helps the plants conserve energy, plus they look a lot better.
Here's Great Tip No. 2: Damp spring? This means mosquitoes will soon be out in force, making yard work miserable. Do what you can now to prevent a population explosion. Dump out or upend pots, tires, and other water holding areas. Toss soil or sand over puddle. Add guppies to a garden pool - the fish will dine on mosquito larvae before they can hatch.
Here's Great Tip No. 3: Groundcover plants are for sale now. But do your homework - is your intended site sunny or shady? Do you want something that flowers? Then prepare the spot, clearing it out and adding organic matter. Don't set the plants too close together, they will fill in. In the meantime, lay down mulch to keep the soil moist and prevent weeds.
Here's Great Tip No. 4: It's easy to plant a small tree or shrub - you can even do it before lunch. Just dig an ample hole, have some organic amendments on hand to mix with the native soil for shrubs. Trees need ordinary soil. Set the plant into the hole, check that it's straight and is above soil level. Then backfill and tamp the soil down gently. Water well and mulch.
Here's Great Tip No. 5: A containerized rose can be planted anytime from mid to late spring. Dig a hole bigger thatn the pot, and have some extra organic matter ready to add to itas you plant. Ease the rose out, and loosend dense roots with your fingers. Replant at the same level it was in the pot, water well and mulch.
