Winter Garden Care

Fall is a great time to prepare for new flowerbeds.   Although plants are now starting to go dormant, maintaining your lawn and garden at this time are essential to having great spring blooms and foliage for next year.  So, savor the cool breeze as you spend few minutes in your garden.  Here are some helpful tips:

  • Turn soil and amend if necessary.  Freezing and thawing over winter makes soil more friable.
  • Rake fallen leaves and compost or shred with lawn mower and place around landscape plants.  Discard diseased leaves, twigs and fruits.
  • Plant hardy, spring-flowring bulbs outdside until the ground freezes.
  • Start spring bulbs in containers for inside forcing to enjoy a little bit of spring in February.
  • Water landscape plants deeply, especially evergreens, before the ground freezes.
  • Cut back foliage of perennials to the ground after a few hard freezes.  Leave unusual seed heads and ornamental grasses for winter interest.
  • Apply winter mulch to perennials and roses after a hard frost and as ground begins to freeze.
  • Drain and store your garden hoses.
  • Store garden chemicals in an area above 40 degrees fahrenheit.  Keep out ot reach of children and animals.
  • Construct  a cylinder of hardware cloth, chicken wire, or fencing aound plants to protect against rabbit, mice, and deer that damage the bark and twigs of plants.
  • Book your Next Spring/ Summer Yard Make-Over with your landscaper early!  Avoid being last on the list and settling for less-experienced landscapers to do your last-minute yard improvements before the kids get back for spring break or family gatherings.
